GENTLEMEN PAINTERS IN PALACE GARDEN Antique Japanese six panel folding screen (byōbu) in sumi, colors and cut metal leaf (kirihaku) including flecks of gold leaf (sunago) on paper, with paper hinges, textile border and lacquered molding, depicting Chinese scholars in a palatial garden engaged in painting, one of the “Four Scholarly Accomplishments” (kinkishoga) with several apprentices attending to their ink stones, the scene framed by trees, footbridge and distant mountains.
